Garden Oaks

Oaks, pines and pecan trees scrape the sky in the neighborhood, which was developed by E. L. Crain in 1937. The community is laid out with rambling, curved streets with no curbs and gutters. The lack of curbs, gutters and sidewalks adds to the country feel of this close-in community. The earliest section on the east side is made up mostly of pier and beam cottages. Small houses with slab foundations built for veterans returning from World War II make up the western part. This is another neighborhood that is becoming popular because of the tree-lined streets, easy commute to downtown and the possibility of renovating and restoring the older homes.

Lots of half an acre of more allow plenty of room for additions that sometimes double the space of the neighborhood's 1,100 square foot bungalows. Some cottages with high-pitched roofs feature attics that have been converted into master suites. A prime consideration in remodeling projects is creating a view to the expansive back yards. French doors and walls of glass are used to make the outdoors an extension of the living space.

The civic club hosts a home tour every year to showcase the renovations. Other projects include coordinating security patrol and developing the pocket parks that are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood.
