| The Houston Heights was founded more than a century ago (1891) by O. M. Carter of Omaha and South Texas Land Co. It has experienced many renovation efforts to restore it to the former Victorian charm that once characterized the neighborhood and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Its close proximity to downtown causes the area to be attractive to young professionals who want a short commute and are interested in renovating an old home. The homes are being updated to accomodate modern lifestyle without destroying the original charm of the home. Heights Boulevard, the revitalized major thoroughfare, boasts wood-frame homes with gingerbread trim, several bed and breakfast inns, quaint antique shops, restaurants, small stores and art galleries. There are approximately 3,700 homes in the Houston Heights. Since the 1970s many homes have been rehabilitated. While the neighborhood has improved over the years, it still has blemishes. Scattered among the historical Victorian homes and bungalows are auto repair shops, convenience stores and resale shops. There are still a number of homes that haven't been restored or fully restored and because of this reason, you will find a wide range of prices available. Because of the rise in popularity, the Heights area homes are commanding top dollar for those that have been restored. Children in the Houston Heights attend Houston I.S.D. - Eighth Ave., Field Harvard, Helms, Holden & Love Elementary, Hamilton and Hogg Middle and Reagan High. |
