| There are six incorporated municipalities known collectively as the Villages. These consist of four villages on the south side of Interstate 10 - Bunker Hill, Hedwig Village, Hunters Creek and Piney Point Village - and 2 villages on the north side of Interstate 10 - Hilshire Village and Spring Valley. Each has their own mayor and police department. The Villages are a desirable place to live because of the large wooded lots, strict deed restrictions, nationally recognized Spring Branch Independent School District, the proximity to the freeway and easy access to downtown, the Galleria area, the Energy Corridor and many other important business locations. The Memorial Villages on the south side of I-10 encompass approximately 11 square miles of homesites. They were created as an independent entity in the 1950's.
