The city of West University has approximately 1,248 residential acres and close to 20 acres of commercial property. There are approximately 13,000 residents. The city of West University was developed in 1917 by former Tennessee Governor Ben Hooper. It incorporated in 1925 due to the reluctance by the city of Houston to extend power lines "out that far"! There is a trend to raze the older homes and replace them with new, multi-story homes. Because of the high demand for homes in the area, very few vacant lots remain. West University maintains very strong inspection and permit policies and also has strict zoning regulations. West University residents enjoy the close proximity to "The Village" shopping area with many unique restaurants and specialty stores.
